SEVEN DEADLY SINS
A series of interviews based on the Seven Deadly Sins from Gig Gossip.
Barcelona-native, 22-year-old Jay Blanes moved to London in July 2019 to become a full-time musician, we asked him what his answers to these sins would be…
LUST: Who or what do you find yourself lusting after currently, and why?
I guess like any other artist on Earth, I’m counting the days to go back to performing live… I have always lived in the online world, a part from busking and private gigs, and this was meant to be the year I’d find gigs in small venues / pubs to start building a local audience. I’ll have to wait another year…!
GREED: What should you be cutting down on, and why?
I should probably control myself with Grace & Frankie! I just started the show on Netflix and I’m loving it so much. It’s so funny, cute and emotional at the same time!! It’s just taking too much of my free time.
GLUTTONY: What one thing could you happily consume limitless amounts of, and why?
Jazz would be one of them! It is very easy to listen to on the background while doing things such as answering this interview and it keeps pushing me out of my comfort pop zone. I love artists like Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall or Michael Bublé, and I keep finding interesting chord progressions or melodies that inspire me!
SLOTH: Stop being so lazy! What is the thing you should be putting more effort in to at the moment, and why?
I recently started a Social Media ads training which will be followed by email automation and all that stuff. Although I’m aware of its relevance and I really want to have it all set up, I just keep prioritising producing and writing new music…
WRATH: Who or what grinds your gears, and why?
Dirty and inconsiderate flatmates, populist politicians, injustice… I guess I try to follow the “quid pro quo” and “don’t do to others what you wouldn’t want on yourself” principles, so whenever I find people who just don’t care about others or focus only on their desires/needs, my blood starts boiling.
ENVY: Who are you jealous of, and why?
I’m jealous of any talented performer out there. I decided a long time ago I’d focus on songwriting and production to differentiate myself and move people, it’s what I enjoy doing the most, but I’d still love to be one of those incredible singers or guitar players. It takes some kinds of patience and discipline I don’t have…
PRIDE: Answers on a boast card! What is your proudest achievement?
Every song I finish is my new proudest achievement! I keep learning to produce, write and mix better and my songs are just turning out better and better over time. They’re all I do with my time and they become my children since I conceive them all on my own!
